Ethical Issues: Foundational Metaphysical Distinctions

Jan 29, 2016 | Ethical Issues

Part 1

This is a two-part series on Ethical Issues, Spring 2016 at Salve Regina University. In the first half of the lecture, I explain a series of distinctions within being for the purpose of preparing the way for a more meaningful discussion of the ethical issues we will discuss in later weeks. Here is the list of items on the handout:

Distinctions within being:

  1. material/immaterial
  2. Ens/esse/essential Being/existence (that)/essence (what how)
  3. General essence/“concrete“ essence (instantiation)
  4. personal/non-personal
  5. conscious/non-conscious
  6. potential/actual
  7. substance/accident
  8. mortal/immortal
  9. absolute/contingent

Part 2

This is lecture 2 part 2 of Ethical Issues, Spring 2016 at Salve Regina University. In this lecture, I closely analyze 2 paragraphs of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail in order to express clearly the relation between the natural law and man made laws. After that, there is a combination lecture/discussion of C.S. Lewis’s book The Abolition of Man.
